Phillies' Utley to have surgery

07/01/2010 - Pittsburgh, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley is scheduled to undergo surgery Thursday on his injured right thumb.

The operation will take place at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York and will be performed by Dr. Andrew Weiland.

No official timetable was given for his return.

Utley, who has played in at least 156 games in each of the past two seasons, was originally diagnosed with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament after sliding into second during Monday's 7-3 loss to Cincinnati.

He was forced to come out of the game in the ninth inning, and was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday following the results of an MRI exam.

The 31-year-old Utley is hitting .277 with 11 home runs and 37 runs batted in over 72 games this season.
